Canon 10D/1Ds: Not your father's 35mm camera!
Friday May 2, 2003

Section 1: Introduction

When I first saw the new Canon 10D at PMA earlier this year, I asked myself: is this the first truly affordable digital camera for the general professional photographer? Certainly, at $1,500 the price point was impressive, and the lines between "Prosumer" digital cameras and the truly professional digital camera have been blurring in recent years - but what exactly is it about a digital camera "system" that places it in the "Prosumer" as opposed to the "Professional" camp?

One important criteria concerns how the camera operates with regard to the professional user. Interchangeable lens control is clearly a key factor. Image quality is obviously another. Prosumer digital cameras, including the very fine Olympus E10 and E20, are absolutely appropriate for some professional users, but in being confined to only a few focal length options and insufficient camera controls and features, most pros looked past these cameras.
