Black is Back: Sony's Artisan display system raises the bar
Wednesday June 25, 2003

Section 1: Introduction

by Andrew Rodney

I'm an advocate for calibrating and profiling a display. I must have started doing this nearly 10 years ago, when colorimeters were expensive, rare and most were dubbed "Breast Pumps" due to their size (can I say that? - Heck, its IR where anything goes, right?). I was a big fan of the older Radius PressView displays mated with the outrageously expensive 12-bit Thunder video cards. They were expensive, but precise to a degree unheard of in the old days (unless you were wealthy enough to afford a $5,000 Barco). Over the years I've discovered a number of nice solutions for calibration and profiling of a display. Anyone that's paid attention to my rants on other sites knows I've become a big Sony Artisan fan. While I realize that LCDs are sexy, and will no doubt become the dominate type of display for the future, they simply don't provide the level of color accuracy I need. But this isn't going to be an article knocking LCDs, though I do have plenty of ammo on where they fall short. Instead, I want to discuss some of the reasons why the accuracy and repeatability of black calibration offered by the Artisan is so critical.
