AuthorSubject: Canon Lenses and Chicago?   [Go to Bottom of Page]
Chuck Jones
Posted on Sat Jul 26, 2003 4:11 PM

Well, after yet another trip to frustration land with my Kodak 14n, I have decided to just bite the bullet and switch to a Canon 1Ds. The 14n will retire to backup camera status for now, and if Kodak doesn't eventually fix the remaining problems with the darn thing it will be sucking water at the bottom of some lake. Nikon won't be shipping the D2X until February best guess, and I have work to do in the meantime. Not that I am that anxious to deal with Nikon anymore. Leica won't be there until sometime late next year either, so for "small" format, looks like Canon is the only choice.

So I promptly called up my favorite Canon dealer, gave him the LONG list of items, and requested him to ship it up to Chicago next week when I will be up there. Much to my surprize, the 1Ds body was no problem, but out of the list of ten lenses, the only one available from Canon was the 16-35 f2.8. Gack, what am I supposed to do with just this one lens??!! Three weeks from Canon on the rest of them, as they have NO stock in the USA of any of my other choices! Also, no spare batteries for the 1Ds.

So I am on a "hunt" for lenses in Chicago. Neither Helix or Calumet has an 85mm f1.2L, but do have the other two zooms I wanted. And the teleconverters. Also no luck finding any of the TS-E lenses so far. Or a 200mm f1.8L at a decent price. Anyone have any suggestions for Chicago area dealers worth checking other than Helix and Calumet?

Also, my lens choices for use with the 1Ds so far are:

16-35 f2.8L
24-70 f2.8L
70-200 f2.8L IS
200 f1.8L
85 f1.2L
24, 45, and 90 TS-E
1.4x & 2x Teleconverters
12 & 25mm extension tubes

Not having shot Canon equipment in several years, are there any "jewels" in lenses that I am missing, or other suggestions I should consider?

Warmest Regards,
Chuck Jones
