I woul like to know if the following is possible using PS. I shoot with a Nikon D100. The inage files have a 3:2 aspect ratio just like 35mm film. I have used 35mm for 30 years and have nearly standardized on my final prints having the 3:2 aspect ratio. (such as 9 x 6, 12 x 8, etc.).

I can use the Crop tool and preset the image size and DPI and have the Crop select box lock the aspect ratio allowing me to have a 3:2 image no matter what part of the image I crop however the final image has been up or down sampled to the preset image size. If I work on that file and like the result but now want a larger image I nees to resample the previously resampled file and my feeling is that would not be a overall good thing over time.

I can use the Crop tool to simpley crop the original file to free hand set size but I do not appear to be able to lock the 3:2 aspect ratio without preselecting the final image size.

My goal would be to crop the image with a locked 3:2 or 2:3 ratio and have that image stay at whatever fraction of the D100 raw file is actually was. I then could work on the image and store it as a reference image and then only resample the file at the end before printing. Currently I crop to the largest image size I think I will need and resize (second resample) for the final print size.

I have been told Genuine Fractuals would allow the preprinting resizing but it still does not get to my desire to simply have the aspect ratio locked when using the Crop tool.

Any help or insights would be appreciated.

Robert
