ImagePrint 6 Notes
Thursday September 2, 2004
by Mitch Alland

I am pleased to see that the new ImagePrint manual for v6 is a great improvement over earlier versions and is, in fact, excellent. The extensive Troubleshooting Guide section is a good addition. Also, as program installation has been simplified, I believe that most questions on IP problems that come up on online forums can now be answered by suggesting, in the best Unix tradition, that the user "look it up in the manual...." These notes are based on ImagePrint 6 build 1.08. If you are using a later build some of the issues and glitches discussed below may have been fixed, as ColorByte is aware of all of them.

I have a small business in it's second year and converting to digital. I am already shooting most all digital, and now find it necessary to restructure my fees for services and goods. My old system charged clients for production fees and goods delivered. I am increasingly spending time converting from RAW files, editing, building webproofs, retouching, archiving, etc.

Although I do some advertising work, since I live in a small town, I depend on the weddings that I shoot for a substantial part of my business. It's become clear that I need to pay myself for the computer time. Because wedding clients shop for packages, I don't think that fee plus expenses will fly, and am trying to come up with a new pricing system.

I'm switching accounting to Quickbooks Pro (Mac) so that I can track time, and assign it to clients and jobs. This seems key--billing for post-production services.

I would be grateful for information and advice from anyone dealing successfully with these issues. I have been experimenting, but sometimes I suspect I am reinventing the wheel. Surely some folks have been digital long enough to have some wisdom to share?
