I wonder if someone can settle a dispute I'm having with a fellow photographer regarding Photoshop's Gamut Warning feature. We agree on the fact that it identifies the colors in an RGB image that lie outside the gamut of the selected CMYK destination space.

My understanding has been that the colors in question should then be brought into the gamut of the destination CMYK space before the mode change to CMYK by using for example a Hue/saturation Adjustment Layer (my fave method).
My colleague however maintains that the Gamut Warning merely identifies the colors that need Perceptual Rendering Intent, his argument being that the gamut compression of this rendering intent should take care of the out of gamut colors. He feels that if my method is necessary it in fact suggests that the Perceptual Rendering choice fails to do what it is supposed to do.
Any thoughts on this matter.
