AuthorSubject: Studio Print from Ergosoft: disappointed   [Go to Bottom of Page]

Hi,
I recently got a demo copy of the highly praised RIP StudioPrint, from Ergosoft.

I made a complete evaluation of it, and I have to admit that it didn't give me the edge on print quality I expected it to be able to deliver.

The mean of comparison is a regular print through Photoshop using an RGB profile, created with my X-Rite DTP22, GretagMacbeth ProfileMaker software, and the TC918RGB testchart.

After limiting the ink channels to their usefull max. I printed the ECI2002V CMYK testchart and measured it. I created the CMYK profile using a CGR3 separation, black 100%, total ink limit 400%, black start at 40, black width at 100.

Then I printed using the Density Adjustment file and the CMYK profile.

The two prints look quite different. The image is a composite image I normally use for profile evaluation. The most relevant differences are as follows:

1-the gray gradient is much smoother on the print made with the RGB profile. The one made with StudioPrint has many stripes and color crossovers.

2-the print made with StudioPrint has a significative loss of shadow details.

I'm very surprised by this result. RIPs are considered the way to go for outstanding output, and StudioPrint is considered one of the best.

Am I missing something?

Please help.
