AuthorSubject: Paper for B&W; with Photo Black Ink   [Go to Bottom of Page]

When I got my Epson 7600 (UC inks) I started using Photo Black and Epson Premium Semi-Matte paper with which I printed large color photographs for a forthcoming exhibition in Bangkok. Because the Photo Black/Semi-Matte combination showed substantial bronzing in B&W; prints (even using ImagePrint), I then switched to Matte Black and EEM and Photo Rag. But, then, when I tried reprinting some of the color exhibition prints using the Matte Black ink, I found that the Photo Black/Semi-Matte combination looked subtantially better than the Matte Black/EEM or Photo Rag prints -- and that was the reaction of everyone who saw the prints, the framers, etc. -- because of better resolution and greater dynamic range (deeper blacks).

So, now, in order to make exhibition saleprints (color), Iíll have to switch back to Photo Black and Semi-Matte. That brings back the problem of what paper to use for B&W; prints with the Photo Black ink. Several people have suggested that Epson Professional Glossy (apparently called Glossy Paper-Photo Weight in rolls) does not show bronzing in B&W; prints and comes closest in look and feel of an air-dried fiber-based paper silver halide paper. Any experience with this? Also, what is the Epson product code for this paper in rolls, as there seems to be quite a few Epson papers with similar names.

A few months ago I saw a reference to a new Oriental Seagull paper that apparently would be released soon and that would work with Photo Black ink to give the look of their famous air-dried FB paper -- does anyone know anything about this?
