Unsharp Mask Demystified
Thursday September 9, 2004
by Ellen Anon

"Ask any number of digital photographers the settings they use in Photoshop’s Unsharp Mask filter (USM) to sharpen their images and that’s the number of different responses you are likely to get. Because of this a significant number of people turn to plug-ins to do their sharpening for them. However once you understand the basic principles involved in using the USM it is fairly easy to make it work predictably and effectively."

ImagePrint 6 Notes
Thursday September 2, 2004
by Mitch Alland

I am pleased to see that the new ImagePrint manual for v6 is a great improvement over earlier versions and is, in fact, excellent. The extensive Troubleshooting Guide section is a good addition. Also, as program installation has been simplified, I believe that most questions on IP problems that come up on online forums can now be answered by suggesting, in the best Unix tradition, that the user "look it up in the manual...." These notes are based on ImagePrint 6 build 1.08. If you are using a later build some of the issues and glitches discussed below may have been fixed, as ColorByte is aware of all of them.

AuthorSubject: ImagePrint 5.6 Black Point Compensation Slider - An Annoyance?   [Go to Bottom of Page]

After printing a series of photos last night, and after reading Bruce Fraser's statement in another thread that the IP5.6 slider "allows you to destroy shadow detail", I began to think that the slider is more of an annoyance than a useful tool. It seems to me that IP would be better if it just printed with full shadow detail and, if the user wished, he or she could compress shadow detail in Photoshop. I find the following problems with using the slider:

Once I have the file the way I want it in the Photoshop Proof Colors preview, after placing it in IP I have to generate the IP hi-res preview which on my machine takes several minutes and then I have to move the BP Compensation slider to several positions to see the effect of different slider settings -- I use the 0, 50 and 100 settings. But each time I move the slider IP takes some time before the view is updated, and one has to look very carefully to see the changes. Usually I have to repeat the slider movements several times, and because of the long delay in the IP update of the preview all this becomes time consuming and annoying.

It seems to me that it would be much better for IP profiles to show the full degree of shadow detail in the Photoshop preview and allow the user to make shadow compression adjustments with a Photoshop curve. But the trouble now is that the IP profiles are not "linked" to the effects of the slider so that one cannot preview the effect of the slider in Photoshop. Am I misunderstanding something?

It seems to me that ColorByte introduced the v5.6 slider simply because a lot of user were complaining that IP blacks were not as black as when using the Epson driver -- and from what I've seen on the IP forum a many of these users didn't even know how to use the Photoshop Proof Colors preview.
