Unsharp Mask Demystified
Thursday September 9, 2004
by Ellen Anon

"Ask any number of digital photographers the settings they use in Photoshop’s Unsharp Mask filter (USM) to sharpen their images and that’s the number of different responses you are likely to get. Because of this a significant number of people turn to plug-ins to do their sharpening for them. However once you understand the basic principles involved in using the USM it is fairly easy to make it work predictably and effectively."

ImagePrint 6 Notes
Thursday September 2, 2004
by Mitch Alland

I am pleased to see that the new ImagePrint manual for v6 is a great improvement over earlier versions and is, in fact, excellent. The extensive Troubleshooting Guide section is a good addition. Also, as program installation has been simplified, I believe that most questions on IP problems that come up on online forums can now be answered by suggesting, in the best Unix tradition, that the user "look it up in the manual...." These notes are based on ImagePrint 6 build 1.08. If you are using a later build some of the issues and glitches discussed below may have been fixed, as ColorByte is aware of all of them.

Hi,

The threads in this forum on pricing are fascinating and very helpful. I thought I would chime in for help with my situation.

I do design and photography for a handful of clients who give me steady work. For one of them I do all the photography and print design. I use my photos in the brochure, and in a steady stream of newspaper and magazine ads all year round that I design. I charge production time for the ads but no fee for the use of the photos in the ads.

I've now been asked by the client to send my photos along to a website designer. I haven't given my client a licence which specifies unlimited use. Do I invoice the website designer for using my photos, or my client? The website designer will then add it to the client's invoice, so he either pays the website designer, and then she pays me, or he pays me directly with a licence allowing him to use the photos wherever he wants.

I invoice the client for all my time and expenses for shooting the photos. Because the client is a friend, as well as a longstanding client, I would like to sell him a license so I don't have to sweat it when I send the photos for the website or to someone else for PR purposes, which happens occasionally. As Seth said in another thread, educating the client about licencing issues is crucial, and that's probably where I haven't done enough.

When licencing photos for use on the website, do I charge a percentage of what I invoiced to produce the shots? Do I charge a multiple? Many of the photos will likely be used for at least five years. I find I am not as knowledgeable as I need to be when it comes to pricing and licencing. Are there standard practices? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Scott
