AuthorSubject: Sony Artisan Consistency   [Go to Bottom of Page]

Posted on Mon Nov 24, 2003 10:26 PM Ok, a few questions for those with experience setting up more than one Artisan. I recently bought three Artisans to replace my LaCie 19's amd my wife bought one for herself. So far so good. I got one last week (two are backordered) and my wife got hers as well. I set mine up right away, along with a spanking new G5DP with the stock ATI 9600. The first thing I noticed was a slight magenta cast in title bars and window backgrounds, further investigation revealed images were noticably more red than I had been seeing on my LaCie as well as prints viewed with a GTI lightbox. Ok so maybe (definitely) my LaCie was not spot on AND maybe my printer profile needed updating. I did try various target colorspaces and also Andrews easter egg for gamma (---) nothing seemed to knock out that magenta.

Then this past weekend I had occasion to lug everything over to my wifes studio to help her with a heavy shooting weekend (don't ask) after which I took the opportunity to set up HER Artisan. Low and behold NO MAGENTA CAST! We finally settled on a tartget colorspace of Fineart (500:1) D65 2.2 gamma. And DAMN this thing is fine! It (hers) is hands down, the nicest looking display I've ever used. If the consistency is there day in and day out she will be a very happy camper.

I on the other hand still have a magenta display. When I set mine up I noticed the cast right off, but it's not that dramatic. Side by side the two are worlds away. (BTW her system is a G4 DP 1.25ghz with an Nvidia Gforce4mx).

So for now I will wait for my two backordered displays to show up. I didn't have the time to swap displays and run new calibrations before lugging everything back to work this morning.

'til then a few questions:

1) Is the calibrator linked to the display ie: can I swap calibrators to eliminate the possibility of a faulty puck? (I tried and it errored out, so I'm guessing no).

2) Shouldn't these two systems end up with matching displays even though there are hardware and software differences? (she's on OS9.2 talk to her not me).

3) Are there any known problems with the G5/ATI 9600/Artisan combo?

4) Has anyone else had this problem or has anyone had do deal with sending an Artisan back?

5) What are the chances getting four of these monitors to match?

Thanks for any advice.
