If I make a levels adjustment layer on a 16bit grayscale image and adjust the white point, black point, etc., why does Photoshop alter the appearance of the preview when I merge the adjustment layer with the background? On my Sony Artisan running at 1600X1200 on a Matrox P750 card, merging layers appears to flatten contrast in the image. Toggling back and forth, I see a noticeable difference between the merged and unmerged states until I zoom in to 66.7% or more; at that magnification, it appears as though the two states are identical. What gives? The image is an "un-descreened" scan from a magazine; am I seeing some sort of moire effect?
