AuthorSubject: Combo drive failure on Titanium laptop   [Go to Bottom of Page]
Paula Lerner
Posted on Sun Dec 14, 2003 7:04 AM When I started the transition to digital, I bought a Titanium G4 laptop with a combination CD/DVD burner. In addition to using it as my backup computer and for downloading/processing digital images in the field, one of my main uses for it was to be able to burn DVDs as a tertiary back up for my digital files.

I bought the laptop in March of 03, and didn't really used the DVD burner much at first. By early June I started burning a bunch of DVDs and immediately had intermittent problems with it. I spent a lot of energy documenting exactly what was happening, and called up Apple for help. They finally gave up trying to solve it over the phone, and told me to just send it in to get the drive replaced.

It was working okay after that, but as I only use the drive intermittently, if something were wrong I wouldn't necessarily discover it right away. Last week I walked into a location where I was scheduled to give a lecture presentation with my laptop, and I discovered a small object wedged in the CD/DVD slot. It was one of the drive's own gears that had popped out or come loose. After my presentation I took it to my regular computer supplier, and they again replaced the drive. Fortunately it was still under warranty.

What's up with the CD/DVD drives on the Titanium laptops? I've had two failures and now two replacements (for different problems) within the last six months on a relatively new machine. For the drive to fail twice within such a short time span doesn't exactly boost my confidence that the problem is solved, or that Apple is using quality parts. Has anyone else had these kind of problems, or did I just get lucky?

Thanks for any input.
