Posted on Tue Dec 23, 2003 9:22 PM Greetings, gang:

I am back again with more laptop troubles. I am on the road, and when I got to my destination I booted up my titanium G4 PB to check my email. To my dismay, the screen flickered briefly and then went close to black. I rebooted, but it was even darker the second time. The hard drive seems to be operating okay, but I can't see anything on the screen to access anything on it. I am writing this from a relative's PC, but need my laptop while on the road to follow up on various business needs.

I will call apple in the morning to see what I can do about this. The machine is less than a year old, so I presume whatever is causing the problem will be under warranty. They have replaced my combo drive twice now (see previous thread earlier in December). So this is the third major problem I have had since I bought the machine in March.

Since the mid 80s I have owned six or seven macs, and have never had this many major problems with such a relatively new machine. Are the titanium PBs particularly fragile, or did I just get a lemon? I haven't been very hard on it other than to schlep it around on the road, but I am as cautious with it as with any of my gear and haven't dropped it or handled it roughly.

Given these recent episodes I am strongly leaning toward buying the extended warranty before mine expires at the one year mark, as Andrew suggested. In the mean time I am stuck without a computer I can use, and my spouse was planning to do a translation job this weekend on the laptop so we are in a bit of a bind while on the road before a major holiday. Any suggestions on what we can do short of going out and buying another laptop (not in the plan!) would be welcome.

Thanks, and happy holidays to all.
