AuthorSubject: Advice requested Sony Artisan vs GDM-F520 monitors   [Go to Bottom of Page]

I'd really appreciate any advice on this. Thanks in advance for any comments.

I've got a Sony GDM-F520 monitor -- it was the top of the line Sony monitor until the Artisan came out. I am considering replacing it with the Artisan.

Sony still sells both monitors and they are roughly in the same price range. (The GDM-F520 has a finer grill pitch than the Artisan -- .22 versus .24) It is not clear to me why someone would buy the 520 versus the Artisan if graphics work is not the issue -- maybe for the finer grill pitch of the 520? Can you see a difference in text with a dot pitch difference of .22 versus .24?

My GDM-F520 is three years old -- in the opinion of the experts on the forum, is that old enough to also influence a decision on replacing it?

I calibrate the 520 with PreCal and Optical.

Will I see a difference if I upgrade to the Artisan for photoshop work?

When I use the word "difference" I recognize that this is subjective. I'm not a professional and the subtle differences that Andrew would immediately notice might be lost on me. I am critical and exacting though -- so the question is whether the difference between the Artisan and the 520 calibrated with Optical is large enough that I'd notice it in the first hour of using the Artisan.

I ran the black level test that Andrew suggested in his review. Assuming that I did it correctly, I certainly can't see a difference in the blacks at the level of 1 or even 2 or 3. To see a difference in blacks I have to bump it up from 0 to 3 or to 4. If you really can see the subtle difference of only 1 in Michael's test on the Artisan it is an incredible monitor!

Finally, I read on another site that the Artisan software is flawed and you have to change the gamma or profile (?) if using a PC -- it was designed for a Mac. Has that issue been fixed for a PC running Windows XP?

Thanks again for any comments and advice.
