AuthorSubject: Grayscale Sharpening Workflow?   [Go to Bottom of Page]

Iíd be appreciative to hear from anyone who has a sharpening workflow for black & white images that theyíre pleased with.

(My hardware/software set-up is described below.)

Until recently, Iíve relied on Unsharp Mask applied as a final step before printing, with occasional local sharpening (applied using a history brush to a pixel layer) earlier in the workflow. My main problem with this has been excessive sandy-appearing pixelated artifact in areas that should be smooth tone. Therefore, I started looking for alternatives, and have begun to experiment with third-party sharpening techniques (PK Sharpener, Optipix Edge Enhancer and Detail Sharpener, Fred Mirandaís IntellisharpenPro).

PK Sharpener seems great for color, but converting from grayscale to RGB and back 2-3 times is cumbersome, plus Jeff Schewe wrote to me that this package isnít optimized for grayscale in terms of sharpening effects. My search for previous posts within IRís forums on this topic didnít turn-up much other than using PK Sharpener. (some day, a PK for BW package???)

Anyone with ideas to shorten and focus my experimentation phase for this task?

Thanks in advance.
