AuthorSubject: Capture Backs?   [Go to Bottom of Page]

I am seriously considering purchasing a digital back to capture larger art (average 2’ x 3’) and other mostly non-moving stuff for myself and others for hire (to help support my costly habits). For 1:1 reproduction, I suppose that I will need 20-25 megapixels.

Currently, my 10D is more or less permanently attached to a copy-stand and tethered across the studio to the computer with a 25’ USB cable. This very pitiful large format capture set-up has enabled me to nail down a workflow that produces fairly good results on the Epson 2220. I am so tired of stitching images together to gather enough pixels!

Have been considering the options (Leaf, Phase One and Better Light backs (don’t know much about Sinar)) for over a year, reading reviews and questioning manufacturer's reps.

I personally capture lots of textiles. I spend tons of time struggling with moiré: descreening/blurring/resharpening. I have read that a three-pass camera would eliminate moiré, but that capture would be very s-l-o-w. I understand that Leaf has excellent anti-moire software.

My general impressions: I am leaning toward a Leaf or Phase One backs for their advanced hardware/software and the flexibility to work with medium format. I do know several art print studios that use Better Lights for reproduction—these backs are certainly less expensive and offer a very high pixel count. I am not wild about the idea of returning to SSCI cables.

Would greatly appreciate any user/expert feedback with backs (including support experiences).

Thanks,

Felicia Lovelett
