AuthorSubject: Canon 1Ds & PK Sharpener   [Go to Bottom of Page]

I recently switched from Nikon D1x's to Canon 1Ds' and am getting my sea legs.

One thing I've come across in the workflow is with the use of PhotoKit Capture Sharpener and the 1Ds raw files. These files have been processed in CS ACR and have had no sharpening applied in ACR.

When I run PK Capture Sharpener - I run it at Digital High-Res Sharpen w/Medium Edge Sharpen. In doing so I find that I get a crunchiness that is very different from the Nikon D1x Nef files (which were rarely crunchy after a Capture Sharpen pass). With the 1Ds files running the PK CS at the settings above (or with Narrow or Wide, too) often causes what I would describe as little black dots in the files. Almost like a charcoal effect in some areas.

I can mitigate this to a certain extent by doing some luminance smoothing in ACR and/or reducing the Dark Contour layer from 66% down to about 33%.

I also saw this kind of charcoal noise when I tested a Kodak slr/n so I wonder if it's a product of a CMOS chip as opposed to the CCD in the Nikon D1x.

In any case, I'm wondering what other 1Ds/PK CS users are doing and if the Photokit gurus have recommendations for Capture Sharpening settings with Canon 1Ds raw files.

Thanks,
Jon Roemer
