Matte Black ink in the Epson 4000 --

How do you select Matte Black versus Photo Black ink since both are continuously available in the 4000?

This is a new issue that was not present in the 2200 (or in previous professional models?) You knew which black ink you were using because you had to physically install it.

Epson tech support just says the ink is selected within the Epson driver by the paper type. It is done automatically and you don't actually know which ink the 4000 is using. You trust the printer to use the correct black ink for the paper type.

So if you pick a matte or cotton paper you'll get matte black ink -- or so Epson says. (And if for some reason you want to use Photo Black ink with a matte paper you must select a photo/glossy/luster type paper in order to force the 4000 to use photo black ink.)

It is not clear whether the Epson driver does this when you select the paper type (if printing within Photoshop) or when you select the paper profile.

Which is it?

Let's assume that you are using a third party paper and third party profile. (As an example, a Moab Entrada paper with a profile for the 4000 created by them since they offer to do so.)

If you select the Moab profile within Photoshop -- I assume it is not selecting matte black ink since the Epson driver doesn't recognize the third party driver.

So in order to print with Matte Black ink on a third party cotton paper -- you must select Enhanced Matte as the media type in the Epson driver when printing within Photoshop?

(I wonder how Image Print will handle this since they don't use the Epson driver -- yet only the Epson driver tells the printer which black ink to use.)
